Purpose of the role
Lightsource bp Innovation Team delivers technical innovation projects and supports the introduction of new technologies and methodologies to the company across the globe. In addition, the team provides technology support and analytics for our existing global portfolio.
As an Innovation Project Engineer the role will provide deep technical and functional support across the life cycle as well as HSE/compliance of solar and BESS facilities. The role is responsible for the full delivery of industrial scale trials, with focus on technical robustness and due diligence on new renewable technology targets. As part of a dynamic and diverse team within an international organisation, strong communication is a constant requirement, including interaction with different time zones. Additionally, the role has regular requirement for out-of-hours working with regards to site visits
This position plays a critical part in shaping the future technology roadmap and supporting the company’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy transition.
Duties and responsibilities
The goal of the Innovation group is to ensure that Lightsource bp remains at the forefront of renewable energy technologies relevant to the company’s strategic goals. The innovation engineering team focuses on enabling the industrialisation and field trials of disruptive tech.
- Deliver industrial scale field trials of innovative and specialised technology in renewables with focus on PV, BESS, and hybrid
- Lead and take accountability for managing the full lifecycles of multiple parallel innovation projects. Adapt project activities to business needs and priorities. Prioritise HSE in delivery of all innovation activities. Liaise and document impact of innovation projects with internal HSE teams.
- Provide technical support, best practice, and support continual improvement across the business, including but not limited to:
- technical analysis of plant performance for evaluation/improvement both pre and post construction
- quality assurance and auditing
- Failure analysis/ Root Cause Analysis including addressing systemic issues
- Technical Support for (Performance Acceptance Certificate) PAC where field trials have been undertaken
- Review and generation of Inspection Reports / punch lists for field trials
- Process improvement
- HSE improvement
- Interact and constructively engage with the full range of third-party organisations necessary to deliver field trials including EPC’s, Engineering groups, suppliers, consultants, authorised bodies, HSE and similar
- Project close outs, lessons learnt and integration into BAU processes. Present outcomes to key stakeholders including industry forums where relevant.
Wider role
- Support Commercial Engineering, Delivery PMs and Communications team during Construction period, Work Completion, PAC and FAC
- Support Asset Management and O&M on ad hoc queries on performance and monitoring
- Coordinate and organise with Third Parties e.g. Contractors, Technical Advisors and Governmental Bodies for review
Knowledge / Experience
Minimum Requirements
- 5+ years in field work associated with the renewable energy industry including exposure to plant design and performance parameters
- Deep experience in construction and operations of renewable energy facilities · Knowledge of EPC/ O&M contract Technical Appendices
- Knowledge of renewable plant performance
- Knowledge of Monitoring systems, etc.
- Familiarity with HSE best practices in construction and operations of industrial scale projects
- Extensive or develop network across a range of solar PV relevant sources with knowledge of industry main stakeholders (TAs, investors, EPCs, Third Parties lab…)

Additional Role-Specific Information
- Travel & Flexibility: Regular site visits and out-of-hours working may be required. The role involves 10–20% travel to support field trials, global stakeholder engagement, and third-party coordination.
- Working Environment: This role operates in a dynamic, international setting with frequent interaction across multiple time zones. Strong asynchronous communication and time-zone flexibility are essential.
- HSE Requirements: All activities must prioritise health, safety, and environmental compliance. Familiarity with HSE protocols in construction and industrial environments is important.
