What you’ll do (the role)

SUMMARY

As a valued member of the Grid team, your main mission as a Grid Congestion Manager will be to analyse and mitigate congestion risks on transmission and distribution systems for current and future projects.

This involves conducting complex power flow and contingency studies, evaluating congestion management strategies, supporting grid connection activities with technical expertise, and proactively assessing available grid capacity to identify both limitations and new development opportunities.

You will help develop standardized analytical procedures and automate study workflows to increase efficiency and reduce errors, contributing to the department’s “seal of quality.” Proactivity, technical curiosity, and a keen eye for process improvement will be essential to your success in this role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  • Key interface between project team and power systems engineers to assess available grid capacity at potential connection points, providing inputs to grid connection managers on feasibility and optimal siting.
  • Proactively identify and evaluate opportunities for new connections or project enhancements based on in-depth knowledge of local grid capacity and system constraints.
  • Collaborate and share knowledge with other teams to assess the context of the electricity system context, including the electrical market, ancillary services, capacity, stability and congestion in each country.
  • Key responsible for creating and coordinating reports with actionable recommendations derived from analysis of historical and forecasted grid congestion.
  • Lead technical support to project developers on grid access strategies influenced by congestion risks and capacity, while identifying opportunities and proposing solutions for congestion management and system stability, including ancillary services, storage integration, flexibility, and demand response.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of robust system models for accurate congestion assessment and forecasting.
  • Review and approve static and dynamic studies to identify system bottlenecks and thermal/stability constraints.
  • Provide strategic guidance on contingency analysis, stability assessment, and mitigation planning for congested scenarios to internal teams and TSO/DNOs.
  • Identify and engage with local companies providing information on grid congestion.
  • Identify and engage with local manufacturers supplying equipment that supports network stability and congestion management (e.g. grid forming inverters, synchronous condensers).
  • Coordinate the automation of recurring analytical tasks using programming (Python, etc.) and define standard templates for study reports.
  • Review and approve technical reports, recommend actionable solutions, and communicate findings to various stakeholders.
  • Represent the company in industry workgroups and public consultations to help define network development plans, capacity assessment rules, and network modelling and operation guidelines.
  • Attend meetings and events with network operators to discuss grid capacity, congestion and flexibility (both online and in person).
  • Manage relationships with the relevant network operators regarding network congestion and stability.
  • Co-ordinate key aspects of day-to-day business management for the department’s activities, working closely with other business units and team members globally.
  • Work cross-functionally to drive high-priority strategic initiatives across various fields to facilitate the department’s growth and management.
  • Promote and secure our ways of working across the department area. Identify gaps in existing processes and collaborate with the department head to implement improvements, roll out new systems, and take end-to-end ownership of continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Advanced data analysis and programming skills (preferably Python, DPL and PowerBI).
  • Strong understanding of congestion management techniques and regulatory frameworks (e.g. ENTSO-E operations).
  • Strong understanding of network stability assessment and management.
  • Experience participating in industry workgroups with TSO or DSOs.
  • Familiarity with transmission planning, connection processes, and grid code requirements.
