What You’ll do (the role)
The O&M HSE Manager is responsible for partnering closely with O&M teams to ensure the highest standards of HSE compliance across operating assets and care, custody and control interfaces with contractors. Reporting directly to the O&M Director, this role provides strategic HSE leadership and support, leading incident control and management to ensure swift and effective response to any HSE issues, ensuring regulatory compliance and promoting environmental stewardship. This includes regulatory notifications, client interface and senior leadership briefing. The incumbent will effectively collaborate, coach, and influence both internal staff and external contractors to embed a strong safety culture and environmental responsibility.
Additionally, the role oversees UK HSE performance monitoring and reporting, delivers clear and impactful communications to stakeholders including all clients, and plays a critical role in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the HSE Management System. Driving the execution of Risk Improvement Plans and related initiatives to enhance operational safety and compliance is also a key responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the UK HSE function to drive continuous improvement in safety, environmental stewardship, including primary responsibility for data management and oversight of carbon performance across the UK solar portfolio.
- Identify, develop, and implement improvement initiatives and business changes, including leading projects focused on monitoring, reducing, and reporting CO2 emissions within the company’s UK assets under contractual ownership.
- Provide expert and proactive HSE support directly to the O&M Director, ensuring comprehensive management of all health, safety, and environmental risks.
- Lead incident response and investigation processes, coordinating timely investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to prevent recurrence and minimise impact.
- Escalating issues promptly to the leadership team as necessary.
- Collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and internal teams to maintain and elevate safety and environmental standards, fostering a culture of ownership and accountability.
- Lead the HSE function across campaign rooms and leadership meetings, delivering insightful, data-driven analysis to inform decision-making and drive continuous operational excellence.
- Lead and facilitate the Regional Safety Coach meetings, acting as a key mentor and support for Safety Coaches to enhance their safety knowledge, leadership capability, and effectiveness in driving local safety culture improvements.
- Develop an annual site audit plan for the leadership team, ensuring thorough scheduling and execution; closely track audit completion, analyse trends and themes from audit findings, and communicate key insights and outcomes to stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and oversee the onboarding of new O&M sites and asset transfers, ensuring seamless integration of safety and environmental standards, processes, and culture.
- Support the onboarding and compliance assurance of third-party contractors, enforcing adherence to established HSE policies and contractual safety requirements. This should include assurance of contractor management systems and performance monitoring.
- Oversee waste management processes from generation to final disposal (cradle-to-grave), maintaining data integrity, traceability and audit readiness in line with company policies and environmental legislation.
- Identify operational training needs and deliver targeted HSE training and awareness programmes designed to enhance competence and engagement within the O&M function
- Lead the design and facilitation of HSE improvement drop-in sessions to promote knowledge sharing and continuous culture enhancement.
- Support the ongoing development, maintenance, and implementation of the HSE Management System by:

- Collaborating with global teams to identify areas of enhancement,
- Developing and updating policies, procedures, and work instructions tailored to asset service requirements,
- Effectively communicating system updates and changes to all relevant stakeholders.

- Lead and support preparation activities for internal and external audits, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) certification processes or relevant ones.
- Maintain proactive liaison with regulatory and enforcement bodies, such as the Environment Agency and the HSE ensuring ongoing compliance.
- Exhibit a consistently professional, pragmatic, and solution-focused approach, undertaking additional reasonable tasks as required to support broader HSE and operational goals.
- Leverage digital tools and data analytics to proactively manage risks, optimise HSE performance, and innovate continuous improvement across the solar portfolios.
- Act as a trusted advisor within the O&M business, promoting proactive risk management, behavioural safety and continuous performance improvement.
- Demonstrate a professional, pragmatic and solution focused approach, undertake additional reasonable duties to support operational goals as required.
- Preparation and submission of statutory and voluntary non-financial environmental and sustainability disclosures, such as SECR, ensuring accurate data collection, validation and submission in compliance with regulatory and client requirements.
- Oversee monitoring and reporting on environmental compliance status across all O&M assets, ensuring conformity with permits, licenses and legislative requirements (e.g. waste, water discharge, hazardous substances, wildlife protection).
Who we’re looking for
KNOWLEDGE
- Strong working knowledge of HSE and C Management Systems ideally aligned with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards.
- Conducting HSE internal and external audits to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement (HSE audits preferred).
- Monitoring and reporting HSE performance for internal teams and external clients.
- Practical understanding of the HSE and C legislative frameworks relevant to O&M activities in the renewable energy sector.
- Knowledge and practical understanding of risks associated with working on Low, Medium, and High Voltage electrical systems. This should include DC systems as well as BESS.
EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL/WORK SKILLS
- Proven experience in conducting internal and external HSE audits to identify strengths and improvement opportunities.
- Strong contractor management skills and demonstrated experience working collaboratively with contractors.
- Championing a behavioural safety culture through leading workshops, Behavioural observations, and reinforcing safe work practices across all levels of O&M.
- Practical experience within the energy sector is essential.
- Skilled in preparing, analysing, and presenting HSE+C data and information clearly to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and external clients.
- Strong analytical abilities with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to diplomatically navigate and manage complex or difficult HSE issues across leadership, management, and frontline teams—being the calm in the storm.
- Strong influencing, coaching, and interpersonal skills to foster positive engagement and drive improvements.
- Excellent organisational, time management and multitasking abilities, working effectively as a self-starter and team player.
- Proficient in relevant IT applications for HSE data management and reporting.
- Valid driving license with the ability to travel across the UK, occasionally at short notice.
- Experience working within a responsive maintenance environment.
EDUCATION REQUIRED
- NEBOSH General Certificate (mandatory).
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification (preferred).
- Experience with ISO 14001/45001 and leading audits (essential)
- Recognised environmental management qualification (e.g IEMA/ISEP Certificate, NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate) (preferred)
- Lead Auditor trained (preferred)
- Certified trainer or strong training experience (preferred)
- Relevant technical or safety certifications related to electrical safety, environmental management or emergency response would be advantageous.
